About the Lake
The McGinnis family found Butterfly Lake in 1974, it was an old rock pit dug out for its precious sand and coral. The Biscayne Aquifer springs were dug into during the excavation process (the underwater lake that feeds south Florida) and a lake was formed. It was John and Joyce McGinnis's dream to own a water ski lake in south Florida and they found the perfect site at Butterfly Lake.
Soon after, they built some property and opened up a ski school. For many years it was run by various skiers. Dave and Cyndi Benzel ran a ski camp for a while and Rusty Carter ran the lake for many years. In 1988 the ski school was taken over by J.P. and Ann McGinnis.
Our site is 50 acres of the finest freshest water you will ski on. We are protected from the prevailing wind and the lake is always smooth and perfect. During the summer the water temperature is 88 degrees Fahrenheit and during the coldest winter months, it hardly ever dips below 70 degrees. Our air and water temperatures will stay 10-15 degrees warmer in the winter than the central and northern parts of the state due to the Gulf Stream coming close to shore in West Palm Beach.
